When we say custom home, we mean more than choosing your flooring, countertops, cabinets, and paint colors. A truly custom home gives you the opportunity to think about how you live and incorporate features into the home from the very beginning.
The Corman home is a great example.
Brandon Corman, owner of Thomas Welding and our client on this new build, had an idea for something you don't see in every home: custom safes built directly into the walls of his new home.
Instead of trying to find a safe to fit the space after construction was complete, Brandon used his welding expertise to prefab the safes specifically for his home.
Our Crawford team then worked with Brandon during the framing stage to coordinate their placement and incorporate them into the walls before insulation and drywall.
That timing matters.
When you're building from the ground up, we can plan for unique features like this while the home is still open and accessible. Framing can be coordinated around the feature, placement can be considered ahead of time, and everything can become part of the home rather than something added as an afterthought.
This is one of our favorite things about custom construction. Not every feature in your home has to be something you found online or picked from a showroom. Sometimes the best ideas come directly from the homeowner. Maybe it's a custom wall safe. Maybe it's hidden storage, a specialty cabinet, a dog-washing station, a unique pantry setup, an outdoor kitchen, or something we've never built before.
Bring us the idea.
Our job is to start asking questions: Where does it need to go? When does it need to be installed? Which trades need to be involved? What needs to happen during framing? How can we plan for it now instead of trying to make it work later? Those conversations are a big part of what makes building a custom home different.
This feature was also especially fun because it gave us another opportunity to work alongside a local East Texas business. Brandon brought the welding expertise through Thomas Welding, and Crawford brought the construction coordination. Together, we were able to take his idea and make it part of the home itself. That's the kind of collaboration we love. East Texas is full of incredibly talented craftsmen and local businesses, and when a project gives us the opportunity to bring those skills together, we're all for it.
If you were starting with open walls and a blank slate, what would you add? That's a question we encourage our clients to think about early in the building process. Don't limit your ideas to what you've seen in another house. Think about how your family actually lives. Think about the things you use every day, what you want tucked away, what would make life easier, and even the ideas that seem a little outside the box. Because sometimes those ideas turn into some of the coolest details in the entire home.
