Fiberglass vs. Wood Doors: Which Should I Choose? Is the Price Difference Worth It?

This is a question we get all the time, and honestly—it’s a good one. When you’re building or remodeling, you want your home to look great, but you also want to know you’re spending your money wisely. Close up view of a wood door versus a fiberglass door

Let’s talk real life for a minute.

Fiberglass doors are filled with insulation foam, which means they help keep your house nice and tight. They do a great job of keeping outside air out and inside air in, which matters more than people realize once the seasons change. They’re also super durable. Fiberglass doesn’t warp, crack, or rot, and it holds up really well to sun and weather.

Another big win with fiberglass is maintenance. Paint sticks better and lasts longer, and if you ever want to change colors down the road, it’s an easy switch. That’s a huge reason we lean toward paint-grade fiberglass for most homes.

Wood doors are beautiful—no denying that. If you’re going for a specific look or an exotic wood, they can absolutely make a statement. The tradeoff is maintenance. Wood reacts to the elements. Sun, heat, and moisture can cause paint to chip or finishes to fade, and that usually means more upkeep over time.

So is the price difference worth it? In most cases, yes. Fiberglass may cost a little more upfront, but it usually saves you money (and headaches) long term. You’re not constantly repainting, repairing, or worrying about how it’s going to hold up over the years.

Our honest Crawford recommendation? For the majority of homes, paint-grade fiberglass just makes sense. It performs better, lasts longer, and keeps your options open. Wood is still a great choice if you really love that look and don’t mind the extra care—it just depends on what matters most to you.

If you’re in the middle of making selections and feeling overwhelmed, that’s totally normal. We walk through these decisions with our clients every day, and we’re always happy to talk it through and help you land on what’s best for your home.
